It must be all that sunshine and iron-packed raisins, because the Sun-Maid girl turns 90 this month, and she’s never looked better.
The original Sun-Maid girl, wearing a red bonnet and holding a tray of freshly picked green grapes, was Lorraine Collett, who posed in 1916 in Fresno for what became the dried-fruit company’s raisin packaging.
Her likeness became one of the best-known trademarks, representing grapes and sunshine. Over the years, her image has remained basically the same.
The Sun-Maid Growers of California have finally decided she needs a more modern look, so they updated her hair and her blouse, gave her a big, toothy smile, got rid of the tray and put her in front of rolling hills. She still has her signature red bonnet, and she’s still surrounded by sunshine.
The new Miss Sun-Maid should start showing up on raisin boxes in April.
